This Coffee Cup project is a 25+ year on-going journey of photographing coffee cups or “the cup”(since 2001) I take with me all over the world as I find them or...they find me.
Photography of coffee cups is always as they are found with the available light that is there while “the cup” is all about position, lighting and my micro managed mood.
This on-going project photographing coffee cups and “the cup” made me aware of the costant seeking of personal and artistic equilibrium (...ego or balance maybe?).
I am the most open minded person I know yet at the same time I can be the most narrow minded person I know.
Photographing these cups actually allows me to sometimes find that balance between holding on and simply letting go.
A beginning of photographing: the “cup” [Scene one•act two]...in a coffeehouse in the city of Delft about an hour outside of Amsterdam early winter of 2001.
The cup I’m sipping out of whispers “take me with you”...without hesitation cup, saucer and spoon went into my pocket. That cup also known as “the cup” travels with me wherever I am in the world.
